How AI-generated wildlife videos risk misleading a whole generation

02-12-2025

With the rise of AI, I've come to realize how easy it is to misinform ourselves about nature. Nowadays, realistic looking videos and images of animals circulate online, but many of them are not real. AI-generated videos depict bizarre scenes of tigers playing with dogs, rabbits bouncing on trampolines or beavers strolling through supermarkets.

This worries me deeply, because I believe that the next generation, growing up immersed in this newly AI-created world, will develop a distorted view of nature. If children spend more time watching synthetic animal behaviour than real wildlife, it becomes almost impossible for them to understand how ecosystems actually function. Researchers emphasise that these fake wildlife videos can create serious misunderstandings about animal behaviour and biodiversity, which will ultimately weaken our conservation efforts. When people believe that wild animals are friendly, common, or easy to interact with, they underestimate their vulnerability and the threats they face in the real world.

The next generation risks growing up with a completely artificial image of nature. If AI becomes their primary source of experience, they may never learn what real ecosystems look like or how these animals actually behave. This disconnect could lead to less empathy, less curiosity, and less willingness to protect the natural world. To prevent this, social media platforms should implement clearer guidelines and warnings about AI-generated content. Schools should also teach young people how to recognise digital fakes and encourage them to explore real wildlife whenever possible before AI shapes their reality more than nature itself.
